Spring Garden Prep on the Fraser Coast — What to Do in August & September
Share
Spring is just around the corner on the Fraser Coast, and August is the perfect time to get ahead of it. Whether you're refreshing garden beds at your Howard property, laying a new lawn in Hervey Bay, or finally tackling that drainage problem in Maryborough — now is the window to do the groundwork before the heat and rain kick in.
1. Top Up Your Mulch Before the Warm Weather
Mulch is your garden's best friend in Queensland summers. A fresh layer in August does two things: it suppresses the weeds that go mad in spring, and it locks in the moisture your plants will desperately need once the temperature climbs. Aim for 75–100mm depth around trees and garden beds.
We stock a range of mulches at our Howard yard — from premium garden mulches to hardwood chips and sugarcane. If you're not sure which suits your soil type, give us a ring and we'll point you in the right direction.
2. Refresh and Improve Your Soil
Before you plant anything for spring, check your soil. Fraser Coast soils vary significantly — sandy coastal soils near Burrum Heads drain too fast, while some Howard properties have heavier clay that compresses over summer. Either way, now is a good time to work in a quality garden soil or composted blend to improve structure and nutrients before your spring planting hits.
We deliver bulk garden soil direct to your property across Howard, Burrum Heads, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Childers, and everywhere in between. Order in a 4-in-1 or Premium Garden Mix to give your beds the best possible start.
3. Sort Out Drainage Before the Wet Season
Queensland spring means afternoon storms, and the wet season isn't far behind. If you've got low spots in your yard that turn into bogs every time it rains, August is the time to address them — not November when you're already ankle-deep.
Drainage aggregate (blue metal, drainage gravel, and ag pipe backfill) is a staple we keep well-stocked. A French drain or simple graded trench filled with drainage aggregate can solve most residential pooling problems before they cause real damage.
4. Lay a New Lawn Area or Repair Winter Damage
Late winter and early spring is prime turf-laying time in South East Queensland and the Wide Bay. Grass establishes well in the warming soil before the summer heat stresses young roots. If you're laying turf, you'll want a quality lawn underlay or turf mix underneath — a properly prepared base makes the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles.
We can supply the base material in bulk to suit any yard size. Give us your area dimensions and we'll calculate exactly how many cubic metres you need.
5. Paving, Edging & Hard Landscaping Jobs
If you've been putting off a paving or retaining wall project, August is ideal. The ground isn't waterlogged, the weather's comfortable to work in, and you'll have it done before summer entertaining season. We stock blue metal, crusher dust, road base, and river pebbles for all the prep work.
