Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Products

What is blue metal?

Blue metal is the local name for crushed basalt rock — a hard, angular grey stone used in concrete, drainage, driveways, and construction. It comes in a range of sizes: 7mm, 10mm, 14mm, 20mm, and 40mm. The name comes from the bluish-grey colour of the freshly crushed stone.

At Burrum Landscape Supplies, blue metal is stocked as our Grey Crushed Aggregate range. Same product, proper name. Available in bulk by the tonne or cubic metre.

What is cracker dust?

Cracker dust is the local term for crusher dust — the fine material left over after basalt rock is crushed. It compacts firmly underfoot, which makes it ideal for bedding under pavers, paths, compacted bases, and anywhere you need a stable, draining surface.

You'll find it listed as Crusher Dust in our store. Same product, just without the slang.

What sizes of blue metal do you stock?

We carry 7mm, 10mm, 14mm, 20mm, and 40mm grey crushed aggregate. Each size has its place — 7mm and 10mm for concrete and fine drainage, 14mm and 20mm for general construction and concrete mix, 40mm for large drainage applications and feature rock. Not sure which size suits your job? Give us a call on 0408 466 287 and we'll sort it out.

What is road base?

Road base is a blend of crushed rock and fines that compacts down hard to form a solid, stable surface. It's used under driveways, paths, shed floors, and anywhere you need a firm foundation. We stock 2.1 and 2.3 road base — 2.3 is the most common for residential driveways, while 2.1 is a finer graded material suited to compacted paths and light vehicle areas.

What's the difference between road base and crusher dust?

Road base is a graded mix of crushed rock and fines, designed to compact and form a solid sub-base. Crusher dust (cracker dust) is the finely crushed material used as a bedding layer — typically under pavers, stepping stones, or as a finished surface on top of compacted road base. For a driveway, road base goes down first, then crusher dust on top if needed.

Do you sell decorative aggregates?

Yes. Alongside the blue metal range, we stock sandstone pebbles (7mm and 20mm), pink sandstone dust, and decomposed granite. These are popular for garden beds, paths, and feature areas. All available in bulk.
