Why Cypress Mulch Is One of the Best Mulches for Queensland Gardens

If you've been looking for a mulch that works hard in Queensland's tough climate, cypress mulch deserves a serious look. We get asked about it a lot at the yard — and for good reason. It's one of the most practical, long-lasting mulches you can put down, and it suits everything from veggie beds to large native garden areas.

What Is Cypress Mulch?

Cypress mulch is made from chipped or shredded cypress timber — typically Cypress Pine (Callitris species), which is widely grown across Queensland and inland Australia. It's a native Australian species, which means it's naturally adapted to our conditions.

The timber itself is naturally high in oil content, which gives cypress mulch some genuinely useful properties that other mulches don't have.

The Benefits of Cypress Mulch

1. Natural Insect Resistance

Cypress contains natural oils — including thujopsene — that act as a natural deterrent to certain insects, including termites. This makes it a smart choice for mulching around the house, under decking, or in garden beds close to timber structures. It's not a termite treatment on its own, but it's a sensible precaution.

2. Slow to Break Down

Because of its density and oil content, cypress mulch breaks down more slowly than softer mulches like sugarcane or lucerne. That means fewer top-ups per year, and more time between applications. For larger properties or low-maintenance gardens, this is a real advantage.

3. Excellent Moisture Retention

Like all good mulches, cypress does a great job of locking moisture into the soil. In Queensland summers — where the soil can dry out fast between rain events — a 75–100mm layer of cypress mulch can make a significant difference to your water bill and your plants' survival.

4. Weed Suppression

A solid layer of cypress mulch shades the soil surface, making it harder for weed seeds to germinate. Combined with a weed mat or cardboard underneath (optional but effective), it keeps garden maintenance to a minimum.

5. Looks Good for Longer

Cypress has a warm, natural colour that holds reasonably well over time. It doesn't fade to grey as quickly as some other mulches, so your garden beds keep looking tidy for longer between refreshes.

How to Apply Cypress Mulch

• Depth: Apply at least 75mm deep. For weed suppression, 100mm is even better.
• Keep it clear of trunks and stems: Leave a small gap (50–75mm) around the base of plants, trees, and shrubs. Mulch piled against stems can cause rot.
• Wet it in: Give the bed a good water after applying, especially in hot weather, to help it settle and start doing its job.
• Reapply annually or as needed: Even slow-to-break-down mulches need topping up over time. A good check before the wet season and before summer is a sound habit.

Where Cypress Mulch Works Best

Cypress mulch suits most garden situations, but it shines in a few specific areas:

• Around the home — the natural insect-deterrent properties are a bonus close to the house
• Native and low-water gardens — pairs well with drought-tolerant plants
• Sloped areas — its coarser texture means it stays in place better than finer mulches during heavy rain
• Paths and walkways — gives a clean, natural look underfoot

• 1 cubic metre of mulch covers approximately 10m² at 100mm depth
• 1 cubic metre covers approximately 13m² at 75mm depth
